Housing

Kailash has a variety of housing options within its main apartment building, PassivHaus, and Tiny House. Across these different structures, there are thirty 1-bedroom units, one 2-bedroom unit, two 3-bedroom units, and three rooms.

Apartments

The main building at Kailash Ecovillage consists of 32 apartments on three levels. The building is split in half by a breezeway in its center. There are 14 ground-level units and 16 second-story units.

All units are fairly energy efficient. In 1994, all units underwent a comprehensive energy audit and upgrade: installation of foam core exterior doors, double pane windows, and insulation of the outer north and south walls, where the windows were installed. Several units have had additional wall installation installed as well as updated cabinetry, flooring, and fixtures.

  • Wired and Wi-Fi internet are provided at no cost. All units are wired for cable TV and internet, telephone, and rooftop broadcast television antenna.

  • Recycling and garbage service are included in the monthly rent.

  • For most units, water and sewer are included in the monthly rent. A few units have water meters and are billed for water and sewer.

The configurations only differ in their orientation. The eight units at each end of the building have an additional east or west window adjacent to the dining area.

  • 2 bedrooms

  • 2 baths

Amrita House

Amrita house was built in 1926, next to our main building. It was remodeled in 2013 using PassivHaus principles. This represents state of the art energy efficiency remodeling.

3-Bedroom

The upstairs is a 3-bedroom unit with a large kitchen, separate shower and half bathroom, built-in central vacuum, balcony, and front sun porch.

Rooms

The lower floor of Amrita House was remodeled in 2013 as an accessory dwelling unit and includes kitchen-dining areas, a living room, 3 bedrooms, a half bath, a separate shower room, a built-in central vacuum, and an extra room with its own entry onto the sunken courtyard with patio and terraced gardens.

This space is rented as individual rooms.

Residents share the utility costs (electric, water/sewer).

Tiny House

In June 2019, Kailash's resident tiny house, Leviathan, was parked next to Amrita House.

The tiny house has water and electric connections to the existing ecovillage grid, and its occupants use our permitted ecological sanitation and greywater systems for excreta and wash water treatment.
