Mission Statement
An intentional community located on a two-acre site, about four miles from downtown in the Creston Kenilworth neighborhood
Providing a sustainable, beautiful, and safe living environment for individual residents as well as the
greater community
History
From a run-down apartment building to a thriving green community, Kailash Ecovillage went through huge transformation
Kailash Ecovillage, located in SE Portland,
Oregon, is an intentional community
offering a model for sustainable urban
living.
The housing, garden landscape, and
learning space at Kailash has been
fostered by the vision of Ole and Maitri
Ersson, who wished to create
a model of sustainability in the city.
Residents have their own private spaces but also enjoy shared activities and a sense of community. Principles of co-housing within a rental model maintain affordability and create opportunity for people looking to experience an intentional community.

A community room, a patio, and a tree house are available on the premises for gatherings.
There's also a guest room, an electric car share and a bike shed are available to residents.
Another great amenity is the composting center used for the various gardens.
The community maintains a share table for food, and shares a tool shed. Residents also frequently share resources and skills amongst themselves.
About 50 residents live at Kailash Ecovillage. Residents have different ethnic and cultural backgrounds, incomes, ages, family types, sexual orientations, and spiritual paths. Potlucks, community work parties, art projects, and shared spaces help build the community and promote the sharing of information, resources, and talents of residents.
What typically wows visitors of the ecovillage are the organic gardening and local food production. The extensive gardens consist of individual garden plots as well as communally managed gardening spaces.
Local sources of energy and water are used on the property, such as solar panels, swales, and a well. The community supports human-powered transportation (biking, walking). An electric vehicle charging station is available for residents as well as the surrounding community.
Residents are encouraged to employ frugal use of energy and resources. They also employ the use of premaculture inspired methods such composting, re-using, upcycling, recycling and ecological sanitation in their daily lives.
